Is Kombucha Good For Your Skin?

Is Kombucha Good For Your Skin?

Kombucha is a popular fermented beverage that offers a number of potential advantages, from improved gut health to a stronger immune system. But, as with many healthful foods and beverages, what’s good for your body on the inside is also reflected on the outside! Kombucha, in other words, is good for your skin, since its healthy living cultures, vitamins, and antioxidant properties can result in a healthy glow. Below, we’ll take a closer look at why kombucha is good for your skin — just another reason to integrate this tasty, sparkling beverage into your regular routine.

What Is Kombucha?

Kombucha is a sparkling, fermented beverage, made by combining tea with sugar and a SCOBY (a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast). The fermentation process results in the creation of living cultures and healthy bacterias, which are known to improve gut health. In addition, kombucha is high in antioxidants (polyphenols), and contains a number of vitamins depending on the added ingredients, most notably vitamins B and C. RISE Kombucha is organic, raw, and unpasteurized, and contains no artificial colours or flavours. Make sure you always find yours in the refrigerated section of your local retailer.

Not all kombuchas are created equally.

Pasteurization kills the good living cultures and bacteria, which is why you should always reach for a RISE Kombucha that contains living cultures, antioxidants and organic acids that all play an important part in gut health!

What Ingredients Are In Kombucha?

In addition to tea and a SCOBY, kombucha is made with sugar, which feeds the healthy yeast and bacteria during fermentation, allowing it to grow. RISE Kombucha contains very little sugar, with only 5 to 7 grams per serving in our Classic line, and just 1 gram of sugar per serving of 207 mL in our RISE 1G line of kombuchas.

RISE Kombucha comes in a variety of delicious flavours, and are made with herbs, spices and fruits — everything is all-natural and completely organic. That means you’ll find real lime and matcha in our Lime & Matcha flavour, and fresh ginger juice in our Ginger variety.

What’s In Kombucha That Helps Your Skin

By taking care of your gut, some might notice a nice impact on their skin, but in the end, good hygiene and alimentation is the key.

Vitamins

There are two vitamins in kombucha that can help improve and maintain the health of your skin: Vitamin B and Vitamin C.

During fermentation, yeast breaks down the sugar in kombucha, which results in the production of Vitamins B2, B6 and B12. B vitamins have several skin benefits, including reducing inflammation, which can benefit those who have rosacea. B vitamins also help encourage the growth and development of new skin cells, and help to combat dryness and acne.

You may already know that Vitamin C is excellent for your skin, as it is a key ingredient in many skincare products. But you might not know that kombucha is high in Vitamin C! This vitamin promotes collagen production, which can help skin remain bright and youthful-looking, while promoting skin elasticity. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant, so it can protect skin from the free radicals that cause sun damage (you should continue to use sunscreen to further protect your skin, of course).

Antimicrobial Properties

As a result of the fermentation process, kombucha contains antimicrobial properties, which can help inhibit the growth of harmful microorganisms such as acne bacteria, and the fungus that causes athlete’s foot.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants, like vitamin C, are potent tools against the free radicals that can cause skin damage. The antioxidants in kombucha can help combat these free radicals, which can help your skin maintain a healthy, youthful appearance, and decrease the signs of aging.

A Hydrating Beverage

Staying hydrated is good for your body, and that includes your skin. Because kombucha is a low-sugar, all-natural beverage, it’s an excellent tool for hydration!

Not drinking enough water, or not staying sufficiently hydrated by drinking low-sugar beverages such as kombucha, can impact your skin’s health. Those who are dehydrated may experience dry skin, or skin that is more prone to breakouts, since skin that is dehydrated may produce more oil. As you age, your skin slows the production of the ceramides that make up your skin’s natural barrier, meaning it becomes increasingly important to stay hydrated, as it will help your skin maintain elasticity and youthfulness, and will help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
